Today Year 5 have enjoyed learning how to use a protractor. We did this by drawing angles onto the tables and carefully measuring each other's, we understand the importance of accuracy when measuring angles.
Pasta session with Chartwells learning all about making pasta. We rolled the dough and cut it into shapes, we stuffed it with cheese and made a pasta called tortellini. We learnt about carbohydrates and how important they are for us because they give us energy.
Today in D.T we have continued our work on structures. We have explored all of the safety procedures needed when working with wood and tools. Then we had a go at marking, measuring, using bench hooks and saws to cut our wood at 10cm intervals. We were extremely sensible and careful when using the tools and wood and are looking forward to sticking the wooden together and creating a wooden truss bridge.
This half term we are making bridges. Today we investigated truss bridges and worked as a team to make our own using straw and tape. We have experimented on how to ensure our bridge is strong and sturdy and will test them with weights next week.
Year 5 enjoyed taking part in their science workshop with a forensic scientist. We were given clues and culprits and had to investigate (using evidence) who committed the crime!
Jaguars have had a lovely morning visiting All Saints Church this morning. We took part in their Easter in a Box workshop where we explored the Easter story using props and crafts.
Year 5 have thoroughly enjoyed World Book Day this year. We’ve taken part in various activities like The Masked Reader (guessing which teacher was reading the story), Footy and Book Quiz, guess the front cover and reading with Year 1 and 2. It’s been a lovely day discussing which books we’re enjoying and getting some recommendations of new ones.
Safer Internet Day 2024 took place on the 6th of February 2024, with celebrations and learning based around the theme ‘Inspiring change? Making a difference, managing influence and navigating change online’. This year the KS2 assembly focussed on change online, this included: Children’s perspective on new and emerging technology, using the internet to make change for the better, the changes children want to see online and the things that can influence and change the way children think, feel and act online and offline.
Year 5 and 6 took part in Archery. We learnt how to hold the bow and arrow and attempted to fire it at the target!
On Thursday 25th January Year 5 and 6 had a special ‘Expert’ visit our school. They have been learning all about Ancient Egypt in their History lessons and trying to answer the question: How did Tutankhamen die over 3000 years ago? Mr Mustafa Menshawy, a University Professor and Egyptian expert, was on hand to share his experiences of Ancient Egyptian times and his theories on how the Boy Pharaoh may have died. The children were all enthusiastic and Mr Meshawy was very impressed with their knowledge and impeccable behaviour!
In English today we became the teacher! We read and marked each other’s work against our chosen success criteria and worked hard to offer useful feedback that would support and challenge us.
The children dressing up for FMPS book festival day today. We shared our favourite texts and characters and definitely got some inspiration of new stories we would like to read.
What a fantastic day we had at Jarrow Hall learning about Anglo Saxons. In the morning the children looked at Anglo Saxon farming and explored an Anglo Saxon village. In the afternoon they got to try on battle helmets and hold weapons before engaging in a battle of their own.
The online safety focus for Year 5 this half term is privacy and security. The children have been talking about the importance of a secure password and enjoyed making password tumblers.
This week in Science we have explored the effect of air resistance. Each group had variables they would keep the same and 1 which they would change.
We made our parachutes and tested how long they took to fall to the ground, we discussed which variables we kept the same and changed and how this impacted the time it took to fall.
Today we have really enjoyed our session with the Mini Police where we have learnt about the roles and responsibilities of the police, including, police cars, the dog support unit and air support unit, we even tried on some uniforms! They will be continuing this project for another two weeks.
In Science we have been learning about forces and we carried out tests to see if there was a link between the weight (newtons) and mass (g/kg) of objects. We enjoyed using the Newton Metres and researching more about the first theory of gravity.
In Art we are exploring Drawing and have been observing retro futuristic images. We chose a section of one of the images to replicate using different media. We are excited to continue this next week!
