Year 3 & 4 had a fantastic time exploring the coastline at Seaham yesterday. We carried out fieldwork to find out more about the physical processes that shape the beach, how effectively erosion is being managed and how the environmental quality of the beach changes. After all of our hard work, we enjoyed a trip to Lickety Split and had great fun stone skimming. Some of us even decided to build rock armour to help defend the beach!
Year 5 went on a field trip around Framwellgate moor, we did this to take a traffic and litter count. We also observed the environment and looked at things like green space, road works and pollution. When we got back to school we collected the data we found into pie and bar charts. We also thought about our findings, and how we could help make the environment a better place in Framwellgate Moor.
Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed their Geography Field Trip to Framwellgate Moor. The children conducted a study of the amount of plastic/non plastic litter found in the area and the number of vehicles driving past a point over a ten minute period. They then used their results to create bar and pie charts.
On Wednesday 3rd May, Year 1 and Year 2 visited the Center For Life to consolidate our learning in Geography. We completed a workshop about the continents and oceans, visited the Science Theatre, Planetarium and had time to explore the life centre and its different zones. We can’t wait to write up our recounts and share them with you.
We followed the map to find the pirate treasure hidden outside. We also had a go at creating our own pirate maps.
The children in Butterflies have been finding out about animals and where in the world they live. They sorted the small world animals according to the habitat where they live. They also enjoyed looking at the globe to find the hot and cold countries that the animals come from. Some children worked together as a team to complete the world map jigsaw. The 3D jigsaw has animal pieces to slot into the country where they live.
Y5 have been using their computing skills to create PowerPoints, complying all of the information they have learnt about SE Brazil within their Geography lessons.
These PowerPoints compare SE Brazil to the NE of England. Some children chose to present their PowerPoints to the rest of their class. Well done!!
We have been using the Atlas to find different locations on the map by using co-ordinates, we have also been doing the inverse of this and used co-ordinates to find and name a place.
within Geography we are learning about South America. We have been thinking about what we already know.
We used play dough to make the shape of South America.
On Monday afternoon, Year 4 enjoyed participating in the interhouse sports competition, competing against each other in a game of Endzone.
On Tuesday, Year 4 were in Seaham for a geography field trip where, luckily, the weather was kind to us. There, we were able to apply our classroom learning to study the physical features of this part of the coastline, focusing particularly on coastal erosion and the way it is managed. Armed with clipboards and activities, the children enjoyed experiencing ‘real life’ geography and we felt they gained a lot from this learning opportunity. It was a busy and productive day but we did manage to squeeze in a trip to ‘Lickety Split Ice-cream Parlour’ where everyone was delighted to have the chance to choose their own flavour ice-cream, topping and sauce!
The children were an absolute pleasure to take and were a credit to both the school and their families.
Year 3 had so much fun on their visit to Hamsterley Forest even if their socks got a little soggy! They carefully measured rocks and sediment, took river depth measurements to look at the shape of the river bed and drew sketches of the river.

Year 4 have been studying Italy this term. To help them understand some of the key physical features of the country, the children created 3D maps, identifying lowland areas and building mountain ranges, plotting the course of rivers from source to mouth, locating and creating the islands off Sicily and the site of volcanoes which we will be studying next week.
In Geography, Year 6 have been looking at the changes in Framwellgate Moor over the last 100 years. After weeks of planning, we were able to go up to Framwellgate Front Street and observe these changes first hand. All of the children enjoyed seeing the ways in which Framwellgate Moor has changed over time
We had a great time finding out more about the polar regions. We were able to explore and actually try on specialised clothing. We found out about preparing for a polar expedition and what food items we would need to pack. We watched the food being cooked and even got to taste it.
We learnt how to put up a tent, how to use a parachute to keep warm. We even got to try a toboggan type sled.
We had a great day and learned so much!
This week in Geography some of Year 1 have been creating a bird’s eye view map of our classroom using lego and other objects. All pupils had so much fun in their groups designing and building this!
