As part of European Languages Day 2024 the whole school took part.
On Thursday, the Year 5 and 6 children enjoyed our fabulous French café with Mrs Raine. As well as learning how to speak in French, they also got to enjoy some delicious French food including: fresh baguette from the bakery, various french cheeses, pain au chocolat and more! The children then spoke in French to share their thoughts on the taste, mostly “J’adore”!
Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed learning Spanish on European Day of languages. They learnt how to say My Name is, how old they were and greet each other. We also identified Spanish colours and numbers.
Last week in German Club pupils had the opportunity to sample German food. Children tried typical German bread, two sorts of salami and smoked Bavarian cheese. They discussed how the food tasted in German and made some notes about each item. To finish we had Black Forest Gateau which was very popular! The children enjoyed their food and also had fun pronouncing the long word for Black Forest Gateau in German : Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte.

Year 5 and 6 had a fantastic time with Madame Raine in the French Cafe! They tried lots of different French foods including baguette, pan au chocolat, Camembert and madeleines. They had to use their French speaking skills to ask for different foods from Madame Raine’s Cafe!
Children from Year 6 entered this poster competition with a theme of ‘Where can languages take you?’
There were over 800 entries of a very high standard. All children who participated received a highly commended certificate.
Here are their posters.
The judges were very impressed with Mia and TJ, who received runners up prizes.
Well done everyone who entered!
Year 5 and some Year 6 children visited Madame Raine’s French Café in school today. They asked for their food in French and tried various French cuisine items from baguette, pain au chocolat, Brie cheese to Madeleine cakes. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the morning, some even asked for more!
We are delighted to announce that a member of our class was chosen as the KS2 winner of a poster competition organised for the North East Festival of Languages. All y6 pupils created colourful posters to encourage children to learn foreign languages. As the winner, she received a winners certificate and a book token. Her ‘languages make the world better’ poster will be displayed in our school, as well as other schools in County Durham.
